Focused on flavor, moistness, and nutrition, Dowd & Rogers introduced its first product: an Italian chestnut flour, followed by three cake mixes—Dark Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate and Golden Lemon to satisfy the needs of little children and adults everywhere.
More recent introductions in addition to the Italian chestnut flour are California almond flour, chia flour, quinoa flour, mesquite flour, coconut flour, the new Dark Chocolate Brownie Mix, and pancake and baking mix. Our Formulators at Dowd & Rogers are busy working on other gluten-free flours and delectable baking mixes. All the Dowd & Rogers products are lab-tested to be gluten-free (less than 19ppm), but you don’t have to be gluten-intolerant to enjoy them. Now, everyone can have their cake and eat it too!

Having been diagnosed at the age of three with celiac disease, Derek Dowd grew up without all the goodies children enjoy—the birthday cakes, the cookies and brownies, even bread and macaroni—because they all contained wheat gluten, a protein that makes bread rise and cakes fluffy. Later, he recalls “in the 70s and 80s, there was a limited amount of gluten-free products, and most of the gluten-free products weren’t very good.”
While in college, Dowd discovered chestnut flour, a favored artisanal staple in Northern Italy, “No one else was doing anything with chestnut flour in the gluten-free world,” he says, and what’s more, he discovered that baked goods with chestnut flour tasted delicious! From that discovery, Dowd & Rogers was born, launching their first product, Italian chestnut flour in 2002. Since its launching, Dowd & Rogers has produced gluten-free baking products that appeal to everyone—gluten intolerant or not.
For centuries, chestnut flour has been a favored artisan ingredient and food staple in Italy, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. When Dowd discovered the ingredient, “No one else was doing anything with chestnut flour in the gluten-free world,” he said. “I thought this would be a fantastic ingredient to put into a gluten-free product.”
Dowd incorporated Dowd & Rogers (Rogers being his wife’s maiden name) in 2000. In 2008, Nutraceutical purchased Dowd & Rogers and placed it as a sub-brand under the FunFresh Foods umbrella
