The Montana Big Sky brand started with a bee pollen product and then expanded into royal jelly, propolis and one of our most successful products—Pure Energy®—a non-stimulant, caffeine-free combination of bee pollen, royal jelly, gotu kola and eleuthero. We are the premier brand of bee pollen, offering bee pollen granules for those who want a U.S.-sourced product.
We offer clean and tested products that you can trust. Our bee pollen is cleaned, dried and tested for mold, mildew and microbial contamination; the royal jelly is tested for 10-hydroxydecanoic acid (10-HDA), a fatty acid unique to royal jelly, to ensure its identity and potency, and the propolis is tested for heavy metals. We go “beyond the hive” to ensure all of our products maintain their integrity and are as high quality as we can find.
The Montana Big Sky logo projects a folksy, all natural image, we use dark brown glass bottles and metal caps for most of our products and a label that reflects the quality of our pristine Montana origins.
In 1982, a salesman stopped for lunch in the tiny town of Terry, Montana and overheard the town’s lawyer, barber and beekeeper talking about bee pollen in the next booth. They had a lot of bee pollen, but they didn’t know what to do with it. The salesman struck up a conversation and he started to sell the granules, capsules, and tablets at truck stops along his route.
Meanwhile, in Arlee, Montana, Ron Hauge, a local boy, had just returned from Europe with his wife Denise, where they both worked for the World Health Organization (WHO). Hauge and his wife were initially interested in bee pollen as a highly nutritious, compact food that might stave off world hunger. This interest coincided with Ron’s need to develop a local business to support his family.
In 1983, the salesman and Hauge crossed paths and formed a small company called Pollen and Herbs. Hauge developed a drying system with cool air that would reduce the moisture content of the wildflower pollen so it could be cleaned, maintain its enzyme content and be shelf stable. Out of their little office, they sent out samples and literature to health food stores. By the end of 1983, bee pollen products were in 830 stores throughout 50 states.
Under the Montana Big Sky label, Hauge sold bee pollen granules as well as capsules and tablets. Later, he added royal jelly and propolis products and in 1985, launched a unique combination product called Pure Energy® which is still a popular favorite. In 1985, Ron and Denise incorporated Montana Naturals as a company with Montana Big Sky as the brand. In 1987, the company went public and continued to grow. Nutraceutical purchased the Montana Big Sky brand in 2004 and as part of Nutraceutical’s Family of Brands it continues to be loyal to the health food stores that embraced the nutritious Montana bee pollen more than 30 years ago.
